Welcome to my site!
Having spent most of my working life creating concepts and images for advertising campaigns, I leapt out of my comfort zone to create 'in the round' 3 dimensional wood carvings, an art form that engages me and challenges me to the same intensity, as the creative process is constant. Because I work mainly with 'found' wood from my native Charnwood Forest, the image of the finished piece I have in my mind's eye, is frequently amended to avoid unforeseen damage and flaws, which become apparent during carving.
My quest is to create the essence of a living creature from a lifeless piece of timber and my inspiration is drawn from nature and wildlife, especially birds of prey, also form my affinity to Art Nouveau and Deco. I prefer to create dynamic form rather than intricate and static 'life study' carvings. Most of my pieces are finished with oil and polish, allowing the exposed wood grain patterns to be an essential feature, resulting in unique and tactile sculptures.
Recently I have been experimenting with 'assemblage' sculptures, individual birds joined together to form one large gathering.
I am a regular exhibitor at The National Exhibition of Wildlife Art, also The Wildlife Art Society International and was awarded this years TWASI Gold Citation for one of my sculptures.
My work can be seen and purchased at these exhibitions, at The Red Dot Gallery in Holt, Norfolk and Grapevine Gallery in Burnham Market also in Norfolk or from my website : PaulVann.artweb.com and emailed : email@example.com if you would like to discuss any aspect of my work or commision a specific wood carving.
